F!G: Geneva !mprovisation Federation

Geneva Improvisation Federation (FIG) organizes improvisational theatre shows belonging to two main categories:

1. Improvisation matches

In a few words, an improvisation match is made of:

  • a small wooden ice rink which is used as a stage
  • two teams made of 6 players (3 women and 3 men) dressed like ice hockey players lead by a coach
  • 2 periods of 45 or 35 minutes of uninterrupted improvised show
  • a referee announcing themes and improvisations constraints (time limit, category, number of players...) as well as keeping an eye on players and whistling them penalties if they do not respect gameplay or rules
  • a DJ filling in intermediate periods with music
  • a Master of Ceremonies announcing players' names, scores and penalties
  • and last but not least: an audience cheering and voting with a bi-colored card for the team they have preferred after every improvisation

F!G organizes improvisation matches within 3 different sub-leagues ordered by age: Teens (<16), Juniors (16-20) and Amateurs (>20). F!G also co-produces matches with the Professional Swiss Improvisation League (LISPro) and with other swiss leagues.

F!G has organized many international events in which 3 amateur world cups and one professional world cup. It also proposes many international matches and events (like the now famous "Improfolies" or "Tournoi International des Jeunes Impovisateurs" tournaments) every year. F!G was the first French-speaking league to invite regularly Italian team of improvisers. F!G members often take part in events abroad in Montréal, France, Belgium but also in Italy. So far, FIG has set up hundreds of improvisation matches and entertained thousands of persons.

2. Experimental improvisation

In 2001 F!G has set up an Experimental League which explores new format of theatre improvisation shows: catch impro, the story you direct... In this league, no formal rules or format but the will to create new formats of improvisation and to have fun! The various formats of shows tested by the Experimental League may be inspired from other leagues' experience or completely new format invented for once.
